About The Text Only Holy Bible Recovery Version API ^

The Text Only Holy Bible Recovery Version API is a simple HTTP URL API that can be used to access verses from the Holy Bible Recovery Version for integration into other software or plugins.

Conditions for Use ^

Summary:^

Living Stream Ministry (LSM) runs an application programming interface (API) service to enable access to the text of the Recovery Version of the Holy Bible and welcomes you to use it by integrating it into your website, plugins, or applications. Our service is designed to give you a way to reference and display the text of the Recovery Version in your projects without the need to request special permission. However, be responsible in how you access and use the API. In particular, properly reference LSM (See 1. below) and do not use the API as a means to download, republish, repackage, or redistribute the Recovery Version of the Holy Bible in any form.
(Disclaimer: This summary is not a part of the Terms of Use and is not a legal document. It is simply a handy reference for understanding the full terms.)

Terms of Use:^

The following terms and conditions govern the use of this website, its API, documentation, and all the content, services, and products accessible through it (collectively, the “Website”). This Website is offered subject to your acceptance without modification of all of the terms and conditions contained herein and all other operating rules, policies, and procedures that may be published from time to time on this Site by LSM (collectively, the “Agreement”).

Please read this Agreement carefully before accessing or using the Website. By accessing or using any part of the Website, you agree to become bound by the terms and conditions of this agreement. If you do not agree to all the terms and conditions of this agreement, then you may not access the Website or use any services provided.

  1. Attribution: LSM requires you, the user or developer accessing this Website and its services, to display the attribution statement provided in the <copyright></copyright> tags of the deliverable "verses.xml" or in the copyright value of the deliverable "verses.json" supplied by the API (e.g. verses accessed from the Holy Bible Recovery Version) in your verse display implementation. LSM reserves the right to change this attribution statement at any time and without any notice.
  2. Changes: LSM reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to modify or replace any part of this Agreement. It is your responsibility to check this Agreement periodically for changes. Your continued use of or access to the Website following the posting of any changes to this Agreement constitutes acceptance of those changes.
  3. Proprietary Rights: This Website and all materials therein or transferred thereby, including, without limitation, software, images, graphics, illustrations, text, logos, trademarks, service marks, copyrights, and all Intellectual Property Rights related thereto, are the exclusive property of LSM. Except as explicitly provided herein, nothing in this Agreement shall be deemed to create a license in or under any such Intellectual Property Rights, and you agree not to sell, license, rent, modify, distribute, copy, reproduce, publicly display, publicly perform, publish, adapt, edit, or create derivative works from this website. Use of this website with its API for any purpose not expressly permitted by this Agreement is strictly prohibited.
  4. Termination: LSM may terminate your access to all or any part of the Website at any time, with or without cause, with or without notice, effective immediately. If you wish to terminate this Agreement, you may simply discontinue using the Website. All provisions of this Agreement, which by their nature should survive termination, shall survive termination, including, without limitation, ownership provisions, warranty disclaimers, indemnity and limitations of liability.
  5. Relationship: Nothing in these Terms of Use will be construed as creating an employer-employee relationship, a partnership, or a joint venture between you and LSM. While you may publicly refer to the fact that you have implemented the API, you agree not make any other public statements that assert or imply any other relationship with LSM, unless you have LSM's prior written approval.
  6. Disclaimer of Warranties: The Website is provided “as is.” LSM hereby disclaims all warranties of any kind, express or implied, including, without limitation, the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. You understand that you download from, or otherwise obtain content or services through, the Website at your own discretion and risk.
  7. Limitation of Liability: In no event will Living Stream Ministry be liable with respect to any subject matter of this agreement under any contract, negligence, strict liability, or other legal or equitable theory for: (i) any special, incidental, or consequential damages; (ii) the cost of procurement for substitute products or services; or (iii) for interruption of use or loss or corruption of data. 8. Indemnification: You agree to indemnify and hold harmless LSM and its respective directors, officers, employees and agents from and against any and all claims and expenses, including attorneys’ fees, arising out of your use of the Website, including but not limited to your violation of this Agreement.

How to use this API ^

This API can be accessed using a simple HTTP GET request. The general structure of the request string is as follows:

https://baseurl/recver.php?String='verses'

or https://baseurl/recver.php?String='verses'&Out=json

or https://baseurl/recver.php?String=verses&In=osis

or https://baseurl/recver.php?String=verses&In=osis&Out=json

where:

baseurl
Refers to the location where the API resides such as 'api.lsm.org'.
verses
Refers to the string of verses to be requested provided either in default input mode as 'Prov. 29:18; Acts 26:19; Eph. 4:4-6; Rev. 21:2, 9-10'
or in OSIS input mode as Proverbs.29.18,Acts.26.19,Ephesians.4.4-Ephesians.4.6,Revelation.21.2,Revelation.21.9-Revelation.21.10. Note that in OSIS input mode the requested verses string is not encapsulated in single quotes.
json
Specifies JSON output mode
osis
Specifies OSIS input mode. (Again, note that in OSIS input mode the requested verses string is not encapsulated in single quotes.)

Please note that only 30 verses are allowed per request.

Default Input Format ^

A valid input string in the default input mode consists of no more than six kinds of characters, these are: alphabets including the period punctuation and the hyphen, numbers, commas, colons, semicolons, and spaces. Using any other kind of character in an input string will result in an error and no output.

While there are various verse referencing styles, only the style defined below will work with this API.

The use of Alphabets and Numbers ^

A general rule to observe when constructing a valid input string is that whereas book names may include alphabets and numbers, book chapters and verse numbers can include only Arabic numerals. Hence, while the reference:

The use of Periods, Commas, and Semicolons ^

The API also understands periods, commas, and semicolons in a specific way.

The period is allowed only for book name abbreviations. For instance:

The semicolon is used either for the separation of two or more full references or for references within the same book but in different chapters. For instance:

The comma is allowed only for additional verse citations within the same book and chapter. Some examples include:

Note: Be careful not to switch semicolons for commas and vice versa.

As you may have observed in the examples above, the colon is used only to separate verse numbers and chapter numbers.

Based on the overview above, a simple input string will consist of only alphabets, numbers, and colons. Some examples include:

and a complex input string may consist of all allowed character sets. For instance:

A final note regarding single chapter books is that they are to be referenced as though the contained only verses. For instance:

Book Names and Abbreviations, Chapters, and Verses ^

This API supports only book names, chapters, and verses found in the Recovery Version of the Holy Bible. The table below consists of valid book names, recommended book abbreviations, and maximum number of chapters in the book that may be used in constructing a valid input string.

Output Format ^

When the API is provided an input, it will default to returning a well formed XML file titled verses.xml. However, it can return a JSON file titled verses.json when the "Out" parameter is set to json (&Out=json). The default verses.xml file is structured as follows:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
<request>
	<inputstring></inputstring>
	<detected></detected>
	<verses>
		<verse>
			<ref>reference</ref>

			<ref>reference</ref>
			<text>verse text</text>
		</verse>
	</verses>
	<message>errors</message>
	<copyright>copyright string</copyright>
</request>

where:

<request></request>
Is the top-level container for an entire request.
<inputstring></inputstring>

		</verse>
		<verse>
			<ref>John 1:26</ref>
